Nobel Women in Santander

The exhibition 'Nobel Women' in its full format was present in the beautiful Cantabrian city at two venues: the Caja Cantabria Foundation (CASYC) in Santander and the Menéndez Pelayo International University in Santander (UIMP).

The Caja Cantabria Foundation hosted at its magnificent headquarters, at the express wish of the Mayor Gema Igual, the main sections of the exhibition 'Nobel Women'.

At CASYC the silhouettes of the awarded women welcomed the visitor, and in its rooms you could enjoy panels, photographs, philatelic and numismatic material, documents, books and personal objects of some of the women awarded with the Nobel Prize throughout history in all its specialties (Literature, Peace, Physics, Chemistry and Physiology or Medicine).

The exhibition space recreated Wangari Maathai's native landscape and Nelly Sachs' workplace. In addition, an audiovisual, projected on a large size, expanded the information on each of the winners and put in images the Nobel Prize award ceremony.

At the inauguration, almost all the countries involved in the exhibition were represented through their consuls. The president of the foundation and the mayor of the city took part in the act. The event ended with a conference given by the exhibition curators.

A few days later, the mayor of Santander and the Kenyan ambassador to Spain planted a fig tree in the Royal Gardens of the Magdalena Palace in honor of Wangari Maathai.

At the same time, the Menéndez Pelayo International University, at the direction of its rector, hosted during its Summer Courses the section dedicated to the writer Concha Espina, to highlight the writer from Santander in the preamble to the 150th anniversary of her birth. The chosen place was the Palacio de La Magdalena, the venue for the exhibition “Concha Espina. Almost a Nobel ”.

The inauguration of this section took place the day after the inauguration of 'Nobel Women' at the CASYC headquarters and, once again, was attended by consuls from practically all the countries involved in the exhibition.

Two days later a conference took place in the Royal Hall of the Palacio de La Magdalena with dramatized readings by the curators entitled “Concha Espina. A pioneer in the literary world ”. The act, full of emotion, had massive attendance.

In this way, Santander brought together in two excellent venues the exhibition 'Nobel Women'.
